Two hikers in the San Gabriel Mountains were rescued in good condition after having spent a freezing night in a rock shelter. Ernest Chambers, 47, of Huntington Beach and Andrew Hawes, 22, of Costa Mesa had underestimated the time it would take them to walk from California 2 near Waterman Mountain to Little Bear Creek off California 39 and were caught outdoors at nightfall. Their flashlight was insufficient to allow them to follow the trail, and the hikers, wearing only blue jeans and sweat shirts, had to halt for the night in temperatures as low as 29 degrees. Sheriff’s rescue teams searched for them and one party finally found them on the trail about two miles from their destination.
