President Reshuffles Bangladesh Cabinet
President Hussain Mohammed Ershad on Sunday appointed a vice president and stripped his powerful home affairs (interior) minister of his portfolio in a Cabinet reshuffle.
The official Bangladesh News Agency said Ershad swore in Minister of Law and Justice Nurul Islam, 66, a former Supreme Court judge, as the third vice president in the republic’s 16 years. The position had been vacant.
Retired Maj. Gen. Mahmudal Hasan, the home affairs minister, was a focus of controversy after a series of political murders and a sudden increase in crime across the country. He will become a minister without portfolio, the news agency said.
