The Nation : Gas Firms Fined for Lead

Share

The Environmental Protection Agency said it will assess $40 million in penalties against four firms for what it said was excessive lead in gasoline. The penalties, which would be the largest ever for such a violation, would be divided among E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. of Wilmington, Del., manufacturer of lead additives; Will Petroleum Inc., a Houston importer; Triad Petroleum Inc., a New York City gasoline broker, and A. Tarricone Inc., a New York City marketer. EPA calculates that 2 billion grams (about 2,200 tons) of lead more than the legal limit was added to the 800 million gallons of leaded gasoline the four were responsible for blending in the 38 months ended Dec. 31, 1985.
