WASHINGTON — Nancy Reagan, who insiders say has great influence over the President’s choice of staff, denied today that she has recommended the removal of White House Chief of Staff Donald T. Regan over the Iran arms controversy.
“I have made no recommendations at all,” she said when queried about recent news reports.
Asked by reporters at the presentation of the White House Christmas tree whether Regan was doing his best to serve the President, the First Lady replied: “I think that’s up to my husband. It has nothing to do with me whatsoever.”
Asked if she was pleased with the way things are being handled, the First Lady said: “I’m pleased with my husband. I think he has done everything he should do.”
