About 1,000 Malaysians protested amendments to the Official Secrets Act in a rare public show of opposition to government policy. Police refused to issue a permit for a planned “Drive for Democracy” march on the public hall in Kuala Lumpur where the rally was held, but no incidents were reported. The legislation, approved Friday by Parliament, imposes a mandatory, one-year jail term for anyone possessing official secrets without authority.
