Venezuelan-bred Benemerito, at 36-to-1 the longest price in a 14-horse field, splashed to an eight-length victory in the $255,-000 Clasico Marlboro del Caribe at Agua Caliente race track in Tijuana, Mexico.
Ridden by 27-year-old Douglas Valente, the 3-year-old colt covered the 1 1/8-miles over a sloppy track in 1:49.35.
The win, worth $153,000 and the eighth in 16 career starts, raised Benemerito’s career earnings to $187,709.
