The Air Force has disapproved Silver Star medals for the two American airmen killed in the April 15 bombing of Libya, a spokesman said. The pilot and weapons officer died when an F-111 bomber exploded after apparently being hit by Libyan ground fire. Defense Week, an unofficial publication, said sources suggested that the Air Force was reluctant to hand out too many decorations for the Libyan action because of the derision that greeted the award of 8,000 medals after the 1983 invasion of Grenada. The two men were posthumously awarded Purple Hearts.
