President’s Personal Popularity Remains High, Survey Finds

Special to the Times

Although President Reagan’s overall job performance rating has plunged in the wake of the Iran- contra affair, his personal popularity with the American people has declined only slightly and remains at a very high level, the Gallup Poll reported Monday.

Public approval of Reagan as a person outweighs disapproval by 75% to 18%, a decline of only 5 percentage points since mid-September. The latest poll of 865 adults was conducted last Thursday and Friday.

By contrast, the latest survey found a sharp drop in Reagan’s job performance rating, from 63% approval in late October to 47% at present.
