The number of children living with one parent has nearly doubled since 1970, the Census Bureau reported. It said the number increased in 1985, to 23% of the 62.5 million children under 18 in the United States compared with 12% in 1970. It said that nine out of 10 children in single-parent homes lived with their mothers in 1985. More black children lived with just one parent--54%--while 18% of white children lived with one parent and 29% of Latino children did so.
