Wilmington : Probe of Truck Yard Asked
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, who represents Wilmington, asked the city’s Building and Safety Department this week to investigate complaints that Swift Transportation Co. is violating city laws by operating its yard on McFarland Street before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
Nelson Hernandez, Flores’ Wilmington aide, said residents in the east Wilmington neighborhood near the yard also have complained that the trucking company parks trucks on nearby residential streets, which also is prohibited.
A city parking enforcement official said officers were out in full force last week ticketing the trucks. The official described the area as an ongoing enforcement problem.
“They have not been a good neighbor,” said Hernandez, explaining why the councilwoman has asked for the investigation. “We have talked to them, and they don’t seem to want to cooperate.”
A spokesman for Swift forwarded inquiries about the trucks to Common Market Distributing Corp., a subsidiary of Swift that runs the yard. A Common Market spokesman declined to comment.
