Monterey Park : Foreign Flag Ban Approved

Share

The City Council has given final approval to an ordinance that will ban the flying of flags of foreign nations in front of City Hall.

The ordinance, adopted on a 4-1 vote with Councilman Chris Houseman dissenting, provides that the two flagpoles shall be used only for the flags of the United States and the state of California.

The issue arose when the People’s Republic of China objected to a yearly Taiwanese flag-raising ceremony held in conjunction with Monterey Park’s sister city in Taiwan.
