Frost May Hit, Growers Warned

Growers were warned that cold nights might bring a freeze early this morning when chilly Canadian air settles in San Diego County agricultural areas. The National Weather Service issued a frost warning late Wednesday afternoon, and similar weather was forecast for tonight, forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said, predicting temperatures in the low 30s and high 20s in Escondido, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Valley Center, Pauma Valley, Rincon and San Pasqual.

Canyons and low-lying areas in other other areas of the county could also receive freezing temperatures, forecaster Grady Svoboda said.

A high-pressure system over San Diego County has been promoting clear weather and fostering sunny days and moonlit nights. Daytime temperatures have remained near normal because the sunshine and air circulation have kept cold and warm air mixed, he said. Dry conditions have also contributed to nighttime cooling. “Air generally cools to the dew point, and that point has been running quite low,” Svoboda said.
