Local News in Brief : Dynamite Found in Saugus Is Detonated
A cache of “highly unstable” dynamite discovered north of Saugus was detonated Wednesday by the Los Angeles County sheriff’s arson and explosives squad.
A neighbor found the explosives Tuesday afternoon in a root cellar in the community of Green Valley, Sgt. Ron Bailey said.
The cellar, dug about 10 feet deep into a hillside, was on an 80-acre property whose owner had not been identified Wednesday, Bailey said.
Thirty-five to 40 sticks of the explosive, which authorities termed “highly unstable,” had been in the cellar for at least a year, he said.
Police were not called until the neighbor brought several sticks of the dynamite to the home of a friend, a volunteer fireman who put it in a bucket of water and told the man to contact authorities, Bailey said.
A sheriff’s deputy in a protective suit carried the dynamite to a nearby clearing, where it was detonated, Bailey said.
