A Los Angeles police officer pulled a despondent woman from the edge of a rooftop in Woodland Hills after the woman had threatened to jump, police said.

“I kept talking to her and talking to her, and I tried to stall her,” said Officer Robert Weisz.

Weisz said he grabbed the woman, identified as 55-year-old Roberta Bloome of Woodland Hills, as she was distracted in conversation with two other rescuers atop a three-story office building at 22801 Ventura Boulevard.

“At one point she put her head down to think about something and I rushed her,” said Weisz, adding that he is afraid of heights. “I just wasn’t thinking about that.”

Weisz, a firefighter and a paramedic all tried to discourage Bloome from jumping and told her that a fall from that height probably would leave her alive but seriously injured, Weisz said.

The incident, which occurred at about 11 a.m., prompted police to close off the intersection of Fallbrook Avenue and Ventura Boulevard for about 20 minutes, Weisz said.

The woman told her rescuers she was upset about marital problems, Weisz said.
