Obese people, particularly those over 40 or who have a family history of a type of diabetes, are at risk of developing the disorder and should be tested the next time they visit their doctor, a national panel said. An estimated 10 million Americans have non-insulin-dependent, or adult onset diabetes, but only 5 million know it, said the panel convened by the National Institutes of Health. Those who are held at risk are people 20% to 30% above their ideal weight as measured by life insurance tables.
