One subway train crashed into another as passengers were boarding during rush-hour Wednesday evening, injuring 27 people, two of them seriously, authorities said.

The 5:28 p.m. accident occurred at Suburban Station, a downtown hub for commuter trains.

A subway train that carries passengers to the airport crashed into the rear of a four-car train stopped to pick up passengers, said John Tucker of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.

The accident halted traffic at the station for about half an hour.

Spokesmen at three hospitals said doctors were treating 27 people. Two victims, a driver and a passenger, were removed from the station on stretchers, while the others appeared to have suffered minor injuries, the spokesmen said.

Since taking over the ailing commuter system from Conrail several years ago, SEPTA has been plagued by accidents. A report by the national General Accounting Office early this year characterized SEPTA’s accident record as the worst in the Northeast.

In August, 42 people were injured when a high-speed trolley crashed through a wall at another commuter station.
