PETER BERGMAN OUT OF HIS HEAD?

Share

“Help Me Out of This Head, With Peter Bergman,” at the Wallenboyd, is a monologue by one of the four Firesign Theatre zanies. It demonstrates only that four heads are better than one.

In fact, the other Firesigners co-wrote two of Bergman’s routines, one of which--a mordant game-show parody called “Eat or Be Eaten”--is the meatiest piece of writing in Bergman’s show. (Firesign fans, take note: “Eat” is not lifted from the 1985 album of the same title.)

But Bergman’s solo material isn’t particularly distinctive. Though he dabbles in memories of his youth in Cleveland, he certainly doesn’t probe very deeply. Much of his writing--about such trivia as elevators and supermarket games--is standard stand-up comic fare.

Bergman isn’t blessed with natural performance skills, yet director Scott Kelman gives his mugging instincts free rein. Perhaps Bergman knows that we miss the other voices and the electronic wizardry of the Firesign albums, and he wants to compensate, all by himself. But less would be more here.
