A new 1,000-megawatt reactor went on line Thursday at the Zaporozhe nuclear power plant in the Ukraine, the official Soviet news agency Tass reported.

Tass said work was proceeding to bring more new reactors into service at Zaporozhe and at four other Ukrainian nuclear power stations, including the Chernobyl plant, by 1990.

At Chernobyl, where an explosion last April caused the world’s worst nuclear accident, two reactors are functioning and a third is being repaired.

The fourth reactor, where the blast took place, has been entombed in reinforced concrete.
