AND NOW HERE’S THE NEWS: You’re going to be seeing a lot more of jazzster Branford Marsalis in the next year, largely thanks to hot film director Spike (“She’s Gotta Have It”) Lee. (Marsalis just headlined a show here; see Leonard Feather’s interview on Page 66 for more on Marsalis.) Lee just directed Marsalis’ new video, “Royal Garden Blues,” which owes its lush, tropical setting to the Bronx Botanical Gardens, as well as a short film (co-starring Marsalis and Diahnne Abbott) that is scheduled to air on “Saturday Night Live.” Marsalis came off so well that Lee has cast the saxophonist in his next film, “School Daze,” which begins shooting in Atlanta early next year. . . . Ex-Duran Duran member Andy Taylor will open a bunch of dates on David Lee Roth’s tour beginning next month. And guess who’s on board, playing guitar for at least some shows--none other than Dweezil Zappa . . . And the “hot new band” buzz around town is focusing this month on Kevin McCormick & the Uninvited, who drew a hefty contingent of music biz high-rollers to see the group’s midnight show last weekend at Madame Wong’s West. Fans included Don Henley (who was sitting with MCA Records chief Irving Azoff) as well as A&R; execs from Warner Bros., Atlantic and Chrysalis Records. The rocksters will be back at the Club Lingerie Thursday if you want to see what all the excitement’s about.
