A suspect arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon received minor injuries Saturday night when he was shot in the arm by the Anaheim officer who took him into custody, a police spokesman said.

Salvidor Manzo Bautista, 19, of Anaheim was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle about 9:15 p.m. Saturday when police officers tried to pull him over. Instead of stopping, however, Bautista sped off, police said.

In the ensuing chase, Bautista allegedly struck a vehicle at Ball Road and Euclid Street, injuring its driver, Anaheim Police Sgt. Chet Barry said. Several blocks away, Barry said, Bautista lost control of the car and was arrested.

“During the arrest, Officer Warren Lucio accidentally discharged his service revolver and the bullet struck the suspect in the left arm,” Barry said.

Bautista was treated for a minor gunshot wound at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center and was released into custody. He is in Anaheim City Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail on charges that include assault with a deadly weapon and grand theft auto.

Barry said he did not know what Bautista did to incur the assault charge. The Orange County district attorney’s office is conducting a separate investigation into the shooting of Bautista by the Anaheim officer.
