Auto Workers

In reference to the letter from Peter F. Tittl of (Dec. 7) in which he blames GM workers for the quality of the product they produce, I have something to say:

I would remind him that auto workers cannot produce a car better than the car that the designers had created. Auto workers do not design cars; they put them together. I think what we need to look at in this issue is what caused the leadership of GM to decide to put profits ahead of quality, to go for the fast buck rather than to “old” American ideal of lasting workmanship and a first-class product. We import so much from Japan; it’s about time we import their high standards and their respect for the marketplace.
