Share

The Egyptian government reported smashing an underground leftist group and arresting 44 of its members who were conspiring to overthrow the government and “impose communism by force.” An Interior Ministry spokesman said the group, calling itself Revolutionary Current, was led by two university professors, a journalist and a lawyer. He said that 23 members were arrested at a secret meeting at Giza, south of Cairo. On Dec. 4, Egypt announced that it had foiled a Muslim fundamentalist plot to overthrow the government and arrested 33 people, including four army officers.
