South African Police Seize Ammunition at Border, Arrest Three
Police arrested two men at the Swaziland border and confiscated thousands of rounds of ammunition in their pickup truck, authorities said Wednesday.
Police headquarters in Pretoria said preliminary investigations showed that the men were trying to smuggle the Soviet-made ammunition into South Africa from Mozambique via Swaziland. A third man was arrested later, police said.
Swaziland is almost completely encircled by South Africa but has a short border with Mozambique.
South Africa has said that insurgents of the outlawed African National Congress guerrilla movement are using Swaziland and Mozambique as transit routes into South Africa.
