Canada High Court OKs Shopping Ban
From Reuters
OTTAWA —
The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that an Ontario provincial law restricting Sunday shopping is constitutionally valid.
The court’s long-awaited ruling, which came Thursday, may apply to similar laws in other provinces. The court stated that the purpose of the Ontario law was to give the community a day of rest and this was justifiable law.
The decision came against growing consumer demands for Sunday shopping. A public opinion poll this month reported that 53% of Canadians favor Sunday shopping.
