Religion in the Schools

I applaud the efforts Sister Therese Antoinette and many others who teach in the Chapel on Wheels. I am Jewish and know that the Lord doesn’t need my help to spread the Good News to a world that desperately needs it. But due to your article “School Panel Urged to Ban Bible Study at Class Time” (Dec. 7) I feel a letter is called for.

Community support for the Chapel on Wheels is widespread and continuous in the Orange Unified School District. I wish we had it in the Irvine school district. I would gladly allow all my children to attend. If Rochelle Maynard has a problem with her 9-year-old daughter’s inability to come up with an acceptable excuse why she studies spelling and not God’s Word, let her spend her energies working on that, and not on doing away with the reason for a needed excuse.

Has Mrs. Maynard forgotten that these United States were originally formed by people fleeing religious tyranny, to allow them freedom of worship. If she thinks that an off-school, publicly supported chapel on wheels with complete parental consent is “inappropriate,” then she may keep her child out of it. She has no right to tell me to keep my children out of it!
