Gen. Gnassingbe Eyadema, the president of this West African nation, is expected to win a massive endorsement to rule for another seven years as voting began Sunday in Togo.

Residents of this seaside capital lined up early Sunday morning to cast their ballots in the single-candidate election, eyewitnesses said.

The vast majority of around 1 1/2 million registered voters are expected to back Eyadema, whose current term expires at the end of the month. Eyadema has ruled the former French colony since seizing power in a coup in January, 1967.
