Cornell Gives Orlov Research Position in Atomic Energy

Soviet dissident Yuri Orlov has accepted a three-year research position at Cornell University to work on the design of experimental atom-smashing machines, the university announced today.

The university houses the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, a national high-energy physics facility.

Orlov, 62, a critic of Soviet human rights violations, co-founded the Helsinki Watch group, an organization in the Soviet Union that monitors Soviet compliance with the Helsinki international human rights accords.

He was released from Soviet detention in Siberia in October.
