An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer has been arrested and booked on suspicion of murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife in their Chino home, police said Tuesday.

Bruce Johnson, 39, called Chino police at 6:20 p.m. Monday and told a dispatcher that he had shot his wife, Chino Sgt. Steve Beckman said.

Officers found Cheryl Johnson, 38, dead at their home in the 4000 block of Carmen Avenue from a gunshot wound to the head, Beckman reported. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Beckman said there was no one else in the house when the shooting occurred.

“We’re looking at possible self-defense,” he said. “There was evidence of a . . . struggle.”

Johnson is a 16-year veteran assigned to the Central Division, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said. He was being held without bail in San Bernardino County Jail.
