A plan to allow the world’s top professional tennis players to compete in the 1988 Olympics received a major boost from the International Tennis Federation and Soviet sports officials.

The ITF said it would ask the International Olympic Committee “on an experimental basis” to open tennis in the Seoul Games “to all players without discrimination.”

The plan must be approved by the IOC before taking effect. After returning to the Games as an exhibition sport in 1984, tennis will be a medal sport in ’88.
