Branches of the Bank of America in Stanton and Huntington Beach were robbed about the same time Tuesday afternoon.
Shortly after 2 p.m., a lone gunman robbed the Stanton branch, wounding a bank security guard and escaping with an undetermined amount of money, police said.
According to Sgt. Hal Brotheim, the man entered the bank at 10450 Beach Blvd. and shot the guard in the arm before fleeing. The guard, whose identity is being withheld by police, was treated at the scene by Orange County Fire Department paramedics and taken to a local hospital. Police said the FBI has been notified.
They described the thief as a black man in his mid-30s, about 6 feet tall, weighing about 200 pounds.
About the same time, a man described as Latino and about 5 feet, 6 inches tall walked into the Bank of America branch at 10121 Adams St. in Huntington Beach and handed the teller a note saying he had a gun, police said.
According to Lt. Patrick Gildea, the teller gave the man about $1,600, and he fled on foot.
