Israel’s military censor asked police to investigate whether a British journalist violated censorship rules in the case of Mordechai Vanunu, a former technician at an Israeli nuclear plant accused of disclosing atomic secrets. Israel also said it would provide “clarifications” to the government of Italy, which is seeking to determine if its sovereignty was violated in the apprehension of Vanunu. Yitzhak Shani, chief Israeli censor, contends that Bernard Josephs, of the London Evening Standard, was the source of a story that said Vanunu was kidnaped by Israeli agents in Rome. Josephs holds both Israeli and British citizenship.
