Showers Fall in South and Northwest; Great Lakes Area Has Freezing Rain
Showers were scattered over the South and the Northwest on Friday and freezing rain made roads slick around the lower Great Lakes, but much of the rest of the nation had dry weather and seasonably mild temperatures from the middle 30s to near 50.
In the Northwest, a Pacific cold front began to move into western sections of Washington and Oregon. A few rain and snow showers developed ahead of the front from Washington and western Oregon into northern California.
Fair skies extended over the Great Basin of Nevada and Utah, the Rockies and into the Plains.
Snow and freezing rain pelted western New York, and freezing rain was scattered over north-central Ohio, northern Indiana and southwestern lower Michigan.
Police in South Bend, Ind., reported about 18 “fender-bender” accidents on slippery roads during the morning rush hour, but there were no serious injuries.
Elsewhere, low clouds and fog reduced visibility across the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, the middle Mississippi Valley and Arkansas into parts of Mississippi and Alabama.
A weak storm system over the Gulf of Mexico spread showers from eastern Texas and the lower Gulf Coast into southern Florida.
