A year after a “cool-down” at the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant, Sacramentans for Safe Energy announced it had more than half the signatures needed to force a vote to permanently close the troubled installation on the outskirts of the state capital. The group claimed to have 12,500 of the necessary 25,000 signatures. The plant has been closed since December, 1985, when a power loss in a control system plunged the plant into over-cooling. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District wants to reopen the plant.
