The World : Extremists Kill 10 in India
Terrorists believed to be Sikh extremists killed 10 people, including a family of four, over a 24-hour span in Punjab state, and Indian police imposed a curfew in Amritsar to prevent backlash violence by Hindus. Two of the dead were officials of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s governing Congress-I Party, sparking a riot in Amritsar by 400 party backers who stoned police and torched shops and cars. Police did not immediately identify the victims. Amritsar is the Sikhs’ holy city. About 700 people, mostly Hindus and moderate Sikhs, have died in Punjab state this year in Sikh terrorism and related sectarian clashes.
