Sudanese rebels killed more than 70 government soldiers in fighting near the southern city of Juba last week, according to a rebel radio report broadcast in Nairobi. The rebels said that forces of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army also destroyed two trucks and an armored personnel carrier and wounded an unspecified number of soldiers in the attack. The rebels are fighting to gain greater autonomy for southern Sudan, whose population is mainly Christian and animist, in contrast to the solidly Muslim north.
