Monrovia : Schools Enact Builders Fee
The Monrovia Unified School District has voted to take advantage of a new state law allowing school districts to assess a fee of $1.50 per square foot from residential builders and 25 cents per square foot from commercial and industrial developers for capital improvements in the schools.
Supt. Donald Montgomery said he did not know how much money the district will collect this year but said it could be as much as $50,000, even though Monrovia does not have much open space for new construction. He said the average new home here is 1,250 square feet, which would generate a fee of more than $1,800 for each home.
The district will use the money to rehabilitate old school buildings.
Montgomery said he expects that every school district in the San Gabriel Valley will take advantage of the new law. He said neighboring districts expected to approve the fees soon include Duarte and El Monte.
