Local News in Brief : Burbank Increases Fees for Sewer Connection

Share

Starting Friday, the City of Burbank will more than triple the rates charged to connect new structures to the city sewer system. The added money will go toward a $9.6-million sewer plant expansion.

The rates now range from $60 to $1,000, and the revised rates will range from $286 to $3,696. Rates are based on how much a new building is expected to add to the waste-water volume.

City officials said the Burbank sewer system already is operating at capacity, handling more than 16 million gallons of waste water a day. That amount includes not only that processed by Burbank’s water reclamation plant but also that handled by the City of Los Angeles under a contract with Burbank. The officials said the city needs the capacity to handle 4 million gallons more a day through the year 2005.

The sewer connection fees will be applied to all new structures, including office buildings, restaurants, hotels and homes. Developers must pay the fees when they file for building permits.
