Patrons at the no name bar were able to welcome the new year with alcohol for the first time in two years.

The bar on Sausalito’s Bridgeway got national attention in 1984 when its owners decreed that New Year’s Eve would be observed without alcohol.

Owner Cliff Clark said the experiment had no apparent effect on the drinking habits of the customers.

“We didn’t feel people were responding,” he said. “Last year, there was no participation at all.”

The no-alcohol experiment was “fun, for a couple of years,” Clark said.

He said people did stop by, but most waited until they had already had alcoholic drinks somewhere else.

“Most had had so much that they had to sit down some place before they tried to go any farther,” he said.
