Hirohito Greets 70,000 Well-Wishers at Palace

TOKYO —
Emperor Hirohito, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, greeted more than 70,000 flag-waving subjects from behind bulletproof glass Friday in an annual New Year’s appearance at the Imperial Palace.
The 85-year-old monarch, looking hale, smiled and bade the well-wishers a happy new year.
