Former Democratic Rep. W. R. Poage, a former Agriculture Committee chairman who served 42 years in Congress, died Saturday of cardiac arrest after emergency surgery, officials at Scott & White Memorial Hospital said. He was 87.

The Waco native suffered a heart attack on Dec. 10 when driving in the city. His car ran off a street and struck a tree.

Poage went to Washington in 1937 at the start of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s second term and stepped down during President Jimmy Carter’s Administration.
