Deposed President Ferdinand E. Marcos said today he wants to return home to defend himself against government charges that he siphoned off up to $10 billion during his 20-year administration.

The government of President Corazon Aquino canceled Marcos’ passport after he was ousted last February. Last month the Aquino government refused to allow him to return from exile in Hawaii for his sister’s funeral.

Marcos denied in a speech broadcast by a pro-Marcos radio station here that he secretly owns five New York properties. The government filed a $750-million lawsuit in Manila last month seeking title to the property as well as damages.

But Marcos said the lawsuit was filed simply “to destroy the name and honor of your servant and to destroy the virtue of the Marcoses.”

The former president also called Aquino’s designation by Time magazine as Woman of the Year “the biggest joke of the century.”
