Strong Quake Rocks Aleutians
The strongest earthquake in nearly a quarter of a century jolted the Aleutian Islands early today, shaking villagers at Nikolski for several minutes but causing no damage or injuries.
The temblor, which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale, struck at 3:11 a.m. and was centered 60 miles south of Nikolski in the Aleutians, about 330 miles east of Adak, according to the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer. The ground shook for about four minutes, witnesses said. The earthquake was the strongest in the area since a 6.5 quake on Dec. 21, 1962.
