New sealing materials in Morton Thiokol Inc.’s redesigned space shuttle booster completely contained super-hot gases during a Dec. 9 test-firing, preparing the way for more advanced tests, the firm announced. A spokesman said complete results of the test were previously unavailable. Gas escaping from a Challenger booster rocket joint was cited in the Jan. 28, 1986, blast that killed its seven-member crew.
