FBI Agents Question Hasenfus on Contras
FBI agents working for the special counsel investigating the Iran arms sales and U.S. funding of Nicaraguan rebels questioned gunrunner Eugene Hasenfus for nearly five hours, his attorney said Tuesday.
Ernest N. Pleger said that two FBI agents acting on behalf of Lawrence E. Walsh questioned Hasenfus on Monday night about his activities in Nicaragua.
Three customs agents conducted a two-hour interview with Hasenfus on Tuesday, he said.
Hasenfus, 45, was a crew member of a cargo plane that was shot down in Nicaragua on Oct. 5 while delivering supplies to the Nicaraguan contras. He was captured Oct. 6 and sentenced to 30 years in prison, but was pardoned and returned home Dec. 18.
Hasenfus gave a statement that he considered to be “complete and forthright,” Pleger said. He refused to comment further, saying the FBI asked that Hasenfus not discuss the interview.
“They asked a wide range of questions. They touched all bases,” Pleger said of the agents.
