La Canada School Board Levies Building Fees to Fuel Renovation
Joining the ranks of districts statewide, the La Canada Unified School District Board of Education voted Tuesday to impose building fees on new homes and commercial developments. Revenues will be used to renovate schools.
The decision is expected to bring the district up to $200,000 annually, a district spokeswoman said.
It takes advantage of a new state law that allows school districts to assess up to $1.50 a square foot on newly built or newly remodeled residences and up to 25 cents a square foot on commercial development.
Under the adopted resolution, developers will be charged the maximum fee allowable by law.
The La Canada Unified School District approved the building fees despite objections of several developers and architects who attended the meeting.
The districtwide fees take effect in 60 days.
