4 L.A. Council Candidates in New District to Appear
Four candidates for the new 1st District seat on the Los Angeles City Council are scheduled to appear Saturday at a forum sponsored by several groups in the Echo Park and Elysian Heights area.
The meeting will be held at the Elysian Heights Elementary School Auditorium, 1562 Baxter St.
The candidates are Assemblywoman Gloria Molina (D-Los Angeles); Larry Gonzalez, a Los Angeles school board member; Leland Wong, a former official of the county youth gang project, and Paul D. Y. Moore, a former aide to Mayor Tom Bradley.
A special election will be held Feb. 3 to fill the seat. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, a runoff will be held in April.
The district was formed in the wake of a federal court order requiring Los Angeles to change council boundaries to better represent the city’s large Latino population. The lines of the new district were drawn after the death of Councilman Howard Finn, who held the 1st District council seat when it represented the San Fernando Valley.
The district now includes the Northeast Los Angeles communities of Elysian Park, Glassell Park and parts of Highland Park, Mt. Washington and Echo Park. Also included are the downtown communities of Chinatown, Pico Union and Boyle Heights.
