--Some people just can’t resist a bargain. When Gary Miller of Peterborough, England, saw the large, round, gold-toned bathtub marked down from $2,470 to $247, he just had to have it. It wasn’t until after he bought it that he remembered that he had no house to put it in. And so it goes as Harrods, London’s famed department store, has its January sale, an annual event in which hundreds of items are marked down to rock-bottom prices. “It’s an institution,” said Robert Hampson, merchandising director at Harrods. Some of the bargains: cashmere men’s overcoats, regularly $514, were priced at $257, and a 21-piece Royal Doulton tea set was marked down from $217 to $130. Another steal: a $287,000 diamond and emerald necklace and earring set was being offered at half price. As of this writing there were no takers, but then, the sale is on until Jan. 31.
