3 Irvine Players Win First-Round Matches
UC Irvine, playing in its first indoor tennis tournament since 1983 on Wednesday, advanced three of its four players to the second round of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
Julian Barham defeated James Johnson of Colorado, 7-6, 6-4; Mike Cadigan defeated Brian Lohr of Marquette, 6-2, 6-2, and Shiege Kanroji defeated Tim Kullick of Colorado, 7-6, 6-1.
Richard Lubner of Irvine lost to Gene Orlando of Ball State, 6-3, 6-4.
UC Irvine, ranked 22nd in the nation, plays at 13th-ranked Minnesota Sunday.
