Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ricardo A. Torres refused to order residents near the Casmalia hazardous waste dump to turn over a study documenting the landfill’s effects on their health to the state Department of Health Services. Deputy Atty. Gen. Don Robinson argued that state officials cannot determine whether the Santa Barbara County dump presents a health threat unless residents allow state epidemiologists to scrutinize the findings of the privately commissioned study, which purportedly found a high incidence of chronic respiratory problems, and other disorders. Attorneys for the residents claim the study is privileged evidence in their lawsuit against the dump owners.
