Orange County Roundup : Hinault to Race at Long Beach
Bernard Hinault, a five-time winner of the prestigious Tour de France, will be among the expected 3,500 bicyclists in the Winning Club 1987 Bernard Hinault Tour de Long Beach Saturday.
The nine-mile fun ride, to honor Hinault’s retirement last month, will begin at 7:30 a.m. on the Queensway Bridge and proceed east along Shoreline Drive and Ocean Avenue at Long Beach.
Hinault will be joined by other professional and amateur cycling team members, including Eddie Merckx, also a five-time winner of the Tour de France. Riders of all ages and abilities are invited.
Nearly $100,000 worth of bicycle equipment and accessories will be given away to participants after the ride in Shoreline Park at 9 a.m. Registration is $10 per person before Saturday, $20 per person Saturday morning. For more information, call (213) 558-3321.
A health and safety clinic for gymnasts, their coaches and parents will be held Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m in Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym.
Nutrition, first aid, conditioning, psychology and the problem of eating disorders will be among the topics discussed.
The clinic is sponsored by the All-American Gymnastics Foundation. Cost is $10 for adults. Gymnasts are admitted free.
Marshall Adair, Saddleback College baseball coach, will conduct a youth baseball coaching class Jan. 17.
Topics include hitting, fielding, bunting, catching, sliding, pitching and organization of practice. On-field and videotaped demonstrations will be used. A question-and-answer period will follow.

Teams are being accepted for the fifth annual Super Bowl Grass Over-the-Line Softball Tournament in Mile Square Park at Fountain Valley Jan. 17 starting at 9 a.m.

Around the Area Jeff Mansukhani, a junior wide receiver for the University of San Diego football team, has been selected a second-team academic All-American in a vote of sports information directors. Mansukhani, a graduate of Capistrano Valley High School, has a 3.4 grade-point average. He had 49 catches for 813 yards last season. The team is made up of athletes from NCAA Division II and III schools and NAIA colleges . . . . The Cal State Fullerton men’s gymnastics team, featuring former Chinese Olympian Li Xiao Ping, will open its season Saturday at the UC Davis Invitational. School scheduled to compete are 1986 NCAA champion Arizona State, Stanford, California, San Jose State and UC Davis.
